"patterson needs us"s' first album, "sasketchewan", was released in '08. it was his first real initiative towords a full and completed musical project. it was mostly totally depressing though. he sulked.

originally "sasketchewan" was the name of a three movment peice, of which, the first movment became the track, "elixir", the first track on "sasketchewan". the other two never were written. "elixir" starts the release and is followed by 8 other songs that were written over a period of 15 years.

but not ALL the songs written in that time period were put on sasketchewan. many were saved and released on the 2010 release titled "square heart in a round heart hole". this release is shorter than "sasketchewan", but had the same heart. it is a mix of older and newer songs. this is where you find the stories behind the songs.

elixir.

a peek into conflict between what one wants and what what one knows is right. it is a story of wanting. a significantly younger woman came into view and showed the immensity of why temptation is almost everything. 11 yrs his younger and terribly beautiful, he knew it was just a bad way to go. for her mostly. a relationship could only be disasterous. although there was the chance for a "happily ever after", he also knew that chance was slim. he knew that it held the potential to be a mistake and after having engaged himself many recent mistakes, he couldnt stand the thought of hurting anyone else. himself included. he let her go. but damn, she was beautiful.

gonna drag you down.

his wife would pitch random fits of discontent for no reason obvious to anyone but herself. they would sometimes last for hours. days. initially, it was depressing to listen to. however, he grew callous in time. and it took on a whimsey. this is what found its way into the song. its nothing  more than a reflection on a spousel rant.

a smaller joe and menelle.

this piece was written for the in-utero first child of joe and menelle mccahill. sorry #2.

anyday.

he wrote this song as an apology to his own first born after he divorced their mother. there was much pain for everyone at this time. he carried guilt for this difficult decision. its hard to explain what the outcome of a marriage of anger and resentment would be with the poignancy of what living it would have. yelling is bad. tempers unchecked are all too poignant.

lieless.

it is her name. ingcognito.  it is a name of memorable and mutual infatuation. the kind where you hate being away. the song itself is about their first meeting in four years. he drove in her direction and she in his and they met halfway in uniontown, pa. they met up at a little italian place and very nervously talked about their drive and their lives most recently. their families. their plans for the future. dinner came and went. as did the weekend in uniontown. this one was hard to let go of.

in one instance for example.

he went to the woods to think and get high after work. there was a bald patch in the middle of a clump of trees by the highway by his apartment. while sufficiently at peace, a loud screech scared the shit out of him. not thinking much about it, he went about the buisness of self-extrapalation. this did not last long, however, as the arrival of the authoritiesa livened up the evening with sounds of justice. what he didnt understand at the time, was that they were not there for him. and he fled. he discarded any impliments of ill repute and ran back home crossing the street a few hundred feet from the flashing lights and bussle. he made it home just fine (well minus a few minor losses. a small price to pay for the feeling of freedom). he stood in his door a for a couple of minuets to asses the scene the best that he could from that distance and vantage. after his mediocre inspection, he was met by his neigbor who was walking home from work. he said that there was a pair of shoes in the road and a lady under a tarp. he now understood that the screech he heard was the screeching of someone trying to not hit the lady in the road.

ninjaberry dance.

he likes writing instrumentals. well i guess technically this isnt an instrumental. but there isnt any singing of words. its more like...i dont know... maybe scatting?  it is very pentatonic. ninjas love this shit.

home - nowhere is too.

its about being a nomad. and an intravert. and alone. and being together. and being apart. its about doing all of that, anywhere you go.

  she says weird stuff.

at this point, he doesnt remember the actual weird stuff she said. just that she did now and then.

i can see the stars.

this song is a favorite of his. he wrote it after his younger daughter came to him one day with a dream she had. there wasnt a lot of vivid recolection of the dream on the daughters part. and so she wasnt able to express much detail. she did, instead, express the  feelings that she had during their time in the dream. it was the typical sort of dream you would expect from a 6 yr old. her daddy and her were in a departent store sort of environment. if one was to look up in the store, one could see the stars right through the ceiliing. there was the playing with toys and throwing of balls. then there was laying on ground, looking up. this dream grave her a very warm and fuzzy feeling that endeared her to her father. and, upon her mention of this to her father, so was he endeared to her in turn.

another single day.

another sinle day was written on a couch one random, rather warm summer day. the kind where the occasional breeze is good for a sigh. a couch in front of a channeled breezeway is where this song decided to throw it self up into a random songwriters guitar. it went through a few evolutions. and stood up to be what it is. the name "a single day", is an omage to the tune "a single day" that was released in 1995 on sonya joyfolds debut release, "one size fits most".  it that was an instrumental peice that featured Miley Day Dove III (yes, that was his real name) on lead guitar w/ wah. it is sort of a fast and "surf style". a band favorite.

mold on gold.

this song was written in two peices. the first half of the song was written last and was a doodle-esque peice that started as a vauge, putzing around and eventually became its own clear peice.however,  it was too short to release on its own and was really just a putzing peice. the second half of the song was written first. it was about the same girl from his "lie Less" song.
